Boone County has 3 County Commissioners with each representing one of 3 districts. District 1—the District for which Bob Brennan is running—encompasses these townships: Eagle (2-4, 7-10, 12,13, 16-20).
The Role of a County Commissioner
What are the responsibilities?
Manage County Property and Facilities
Control, maintain, and supervise county-owned property, including the courthouse, jail, public offices, and other county facilities.
Oversee Roads, Bridges, and Infrastructure
Supervise the construction, maintenance, and repair of county roads and bridges, and provide for traffic control and related infrastructure needs.
Approve Contracts and County Spending
Audit and authorize claims against the county, receive bids, approve contracts, and authorize payments on behalf of the county.
Make Appointments and Manage Personnel Policies
Appoint members to boards, commissions, and committees, fill certain vacancies, appoint some department heads, and establish personnel policies such as vacation, sick leave, and holiday benefits.
Support County Governance and Economic Development
Pass ordinances within their authority, administer certain election functions, create economic development programs to attract and retain jobs, and help guide county planning initiatives.
In simple terms, Boone County Commissioners act much like a county's executive board: they manage county assets, infrastructure, contracts, personnel, and major policy initiatives while working alongside the County Council, which handles much of the county's budgeting and fiscal oversight.
